ERIC SHEA
I’m an artist based in San Leandro, California, originally from Camden, South Carolina. I lived in the Charleston area as a young adult before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2008. The landscapes, waterways, people, and cultures of the places I’ve called home deeply influence my paintings.
At heart, I’m a landscape and wildlife artist who values the natural world and seeks to capture its light, mood, and drama. I’m also inspired by mid-century design, art, and music, as well as the lasting contributions of artists, scientists, musicians, poets, and writers from all eras. I have a deep appreciation for historical architecture and enjoy uncovering the local stories of my community.
I paint primarily in oils but also use acrylics, gouache, and drawing media as the subject or mood dictates. While my subject matter is often carefully considered, I apply paint in an expressive and spontaneous way, balancing planning with exploration.
I hold a BFA in Animation and Visual Development from the Academy of Art University and a BA in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina. After more than 20 years as a professional graphic designer, I’m transitioning toward a more personal studio practice that reflects my own creative voice. I value lifelong learning and continue to expand my skills through ongoing online and in-person study.
